Why the reuse of coal mining sites for nuclear power plants makes good sense
There are numerous factors that make existing coal power station sites ideal for replacing them with nuclear power stations. Land is available that is sufficiently far from urban areas for the perimeter of a coal mine, that is also adequate for perimeter fencing of a nuclear power station. There is a grid transmission point connected to coal power station that can be used for new nuclear power station. A water supply is used to provide steam for turbines to a coal power station. That same water source can be used for steam turbines in a nuclear power station.
There are also infrastructure elements that may or may not be able to be used depending on the age and compatibility of the existing facilities. These can include roads, miscellaneous buildings, car parks, cooling towers, water cooling ponds, steam turbines, steam turbine buildings, and electrical substations. These can be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may provide some opportunities for savings beyond what is allowed for in preliminary costings.
