Focus on the Problem

It’s easy to get caught up in local politics with little regard for what’s going on in the world. There is a massive problem. About a third of the world’s population need lots of very cheap electricity and it’s far more important to many of them than climate change. This is highlighted in China on the map showing new coal power stations and graph showing a dominant red area (coal), with gas and a smattering of renewable energy [1].

To get the world off coal, we need lower cost alternatives, so there’s a compelling economic reason to change. Advanced renewables, nuclear fission, fusion, clean carbon and carbon capture are all possible but expensive. We need to stop fighting and focus on cooperation and innovation, to develop these and other energy sources. This is essential if we hope to make any meaningful progress in reducing carbon emissions.
