Fear based politics from climate-alarmists to anti-nuclear extremists now extends to billionaire self-interests, with Simon Holmes À Court claiming nuclear energy is a “Trojan Horse” [1]. Against this, some of the brightest minds in the world are advancing nuclear energy with 80 small modular reactor SMR designs at different stages of development across 18 countries [2]. Fusion reactor advances are also occurring in USA, China, UK and France. Coupled with these evolving technologies, there are 65 nuclear reactors currently under construction, with a further 90 being planned [3].
The so-called “Trojan Horse” nuclear energy, is a larger producer of zero-carbon energy at 9.2% of global energy, compared with wind producing 7.5% and solar providing 4.5% [4]. It’s not just about percentages, nuclear is safe, reliable, it provides baseload rather than intermittent power. Whereas variable wind and solar need batteries, pumped hydro and gas turbines for backup. Nuclear power stations can plug into existing grids without taking up thousands of hectares of wilderness, bushlands and valuable rural areas, that are being covered in wind turbines and transmission lines [5].
The Holmes À Court narrative is an insult to our intelligence and out-of-step with responsible countries that are committed to global emissions reductions. This was highlighted at COP28 with over 20 countries pledging to triple their nuclear energy by 2050 [6] whilst Australia pursues an inefficient and environmentally damaging, renewables only agenda.
